American Metal Roofs Launches “Teddy Bears for Troubled Kids”
May 12, 2008
Flint, MI – 300 black and brown teddy bears have recently taken up residence at the Wayne County Sheriff’s office – their ultimate destination: the arms of children in crisis. Frank Farmer, President of American Metal Roofs, headquartered in Flint, is behind the donation.
“When a child is caught up in a situation that involves the police you just know they’re scared,” said Farmer. “We figure a teddy bear might bring some comfort and help a child cope with difficult circumstances. We just want to bring some level of security and to provide the Wayne County Sheriffs with something they can offer a child who may be scared or upset.”
The offering started out as an idea that Farmer brought up in a meeting with AMR staff. “I had talked about this idea before but we hadn’t really had any luck reaching the law enforcement community about setting up a program like this,” adds Farmer. “That’s where WJR was a huge help. Their community connections got us started and now we’re looking at expanding the offering to as many counties as we can.”
Farmer was interviewed Tuesday morning on WJR about the program. “We can’t thank WJR enough. Detroit – and the whole state of Michigan – has been very good to American Metal Roofs. We just want to offer something back that has meaning for kids who need help. Its sad that children find themselves in bad situations that are beyond they’re control. We just want to offer whatever help and comfort we can. And we couldn’t do this without the generous help of the folks at the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department. We’re grateful to everyone involved.”
