Metal Roofs Last Longer Than Asphalt

Dear Glenn: I have seen metal roofs in use in my trips to Florida and now see ads for long-life metal roofs. Are they good for my area? If priced differently (higher), what are the true benefits? Would you get a metal roof compared to a traditional shingle roof?

Dear Mike: The price is at least 2 1/2 times that of a top-of-the-line asphalt roof. However, a metal roof could last a lot longer than you. Installation is critical. Choose a metal roof specialist, such as American Metal Roofs, (800-287-0677, www.americanmetalroofs.com). I would look at galvanized or aluminum roofs. If you won the lottery, copper would be my first choice.
